I have always worked hard on staying healthy and in shape. As we all know this is an ongoing process and sometimes a struggle. I have done it all. Worked out at the gym, trained and run in marathons, Barre, Zumba, Yoga, TRX, Cross Training, and Cross Fit to name a few. I love all of it. I am finding that eating right and switching up my workouts to how I feel, paying attention to my body and what it is telling me, helps me have more energy and recover more quickly from my workouts.
I am not expert on health and fitness to be sure. However, I am going to share with you some tips on what I do to get the most out of my workouts, and still find joy in eating while getting stronger and feeling comfortable with my body.
I have tried the Paleo Diet, which is basically cutting out grains, dairy and processed fats and sugars and eating foods consisting of meat, fruit, veggies, and nuts. This worked for me for two months. Then it was just too much work, and I ended up feeling I was missing the fun when I went out with my friends who were eating healthy but yummy things I would not allow myself to eat. Currently, I have cut back dessert to twice a week, and do a modified version of the Paleo, allowing myself a treat such as, dessert, pasta or a yummy burger once in a while; so I don’t feel I am missing out. The key for me is to eat smart and not worry if I have something I really want once in a while that might not be the best choice.

My rule is to do what makes me happy but gets results. My favorite workout right now is Cross Fit. I love my trainer! She kicks my ass, and always pushes me passed that place I never thought I could go. I have seen a huge difference in my body and how strong and athletic I am. As much as I love Cross Fit, I am noticing that certain parts of my body are having a harder time recovering. In order to keep my body healthy; I have cut back on my Cross Fit training, and started to add other types of workouts during the week; so I can keep my body tight and happy.
This has actually brought on a love of working out I have never knew. I get to Cross Fit one or two days a week, and then on my off days I will do an Extreme Workout, Zumba, Kick Boxing or TRX class in the gym. Other days I will hop on that dreaded Stair Climbing machine from hell, force myself to push on for 20- 25 minute, run on the treadmill, do 3 sets of 3 different cross fit exercises on my own, and ahhhhh stretch.
I am becoming my own trainer, and the beauty of this is every day I get to do something different so I don’t get bored. My favorite days are my off days when I go for a walk or run in my neighborhood. A good week for me will be getting 5 workouts in with two days off.
Sample Workout Week for Elyse
- Monday– Cross Fit
- Tuesday– Off – Will take a nice walk or jog in my neighborhood or hike the reservoir with my sis!
- Wednesday– Cross Fit or Gym- Extreme Workout Cross Training or Kick Boxing Class
- Thursday– Off
- Friday– Gym- Stair Climber 20-25 Minutes, Treadmill run- 10 minutes, 3 sets of 10 Kettle Bell Swings, 3 sets of 10 Thrusters with dumbbells, 3 sets of 10 push-ups. ( I will switch these up), stretch and roll.
- Saturday– off
- Sunday – Zumba or another Gym workout
